Your Website is F’n Bloated

If there is one thing that has been talked about a lot recently is the word “bloat”.  I’ve been seeing this a lot in the fitness industry, especially in regards to weight loss.  In the United States especially, there are a lot of cases where people are overweight, and it shows the most in their stomach.  A lot of times, it’s not even that they’re actually “overweight” though, but more that their stomach is “bloated” with visceral fat.

Now you’re probably wondering, “what in the hell is he going on about with a website being bloated”.

Well there are a couple of things about your website being bloated that might mess up your chances at gaining any clients, both on the front end of your website and on the backend.

So on the backend of your website, especially if you’re using WordPress, you might have your website bloated with way too many plugins.  Now you might ask, how many plugins are too many?  My website needs all of these plugins to function.  I need a plugin to do this, I need a plugin to do that.

That’s the same lie that we were told growing up about foods that we need, like carbs, excess fats, sugars, etc.  We were told we need all of these things, so we overloaded on them and now we’re bloated to the point of…well, I don’t want to say “no return” because you can come back.  But it’s going to take time.

With WordPress plugins, that’s led to people to do the same thing with their website.  They wanted a “Mega Menu”, so they got a separate Mega Menu plugin.  They wanted a contact form, so they got 3 different form plugins.  They wanted redirects, so they got 2 or 3 different redirect plugins as one functions different from the other.  And the list goes on.

The thing is, when you’re building your website, the more plugins you add, the slower your website is going to become.  It’s like your body.  The more food you add, the slower you’re going to become.  The only difference is, you can’t just exercise your website to become faster.  Sure, people are going to tell you to “add this plugin to speed up your website”, “add this plugin to hide this plugin” and it’s JUST SO FUCKING MUCH!  Next thing you know, you have over 50 plugins that is slowing your website down to the point where you literally have a score of 22 on Google PageSpeed insights, and that’s on desktop view.  I pray for you on mobile view.  People come to your website and it takes them almost a minute for the website to load everything.  My brother in Christ….that’s ridiculous.

But now let’s talk about the frontend of your website.

Pages. SO MANY FUCKING PAGES!

Now listen, I worked with companies whose website was a whole mess.  To the point where you hover over a dropdown menu, and the menu would have 20 dropdowns.  When you hover over a dropdown menu and the scrollbar shows up, you know you done messed up.  That’s way too much.  If I was a client and I saw that, I’m leaving your website immediately.

And then, not only that, look at your sitemap. There are times you’ll see a sitemap and a website would have over 300+ pages.  Only 10 of them are used. Yet another reason your website is going slow.

So now you’re probably wondering.  How do I fix this?

Well just like with your weight, you’re probably going to want to go to a personal trainer. Someone that knows how to handle the situation that you’re in and help you fix it.

That’s where I come in.  I’ve been in this field for 15+ years professionally, 25+ years unprofessionally.  I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly on websites and now I’m at the point where I’d like to help you resolve those issues.
